Achieving Equality for People with Disabilities

ERIMUS Housing is leading the way in achieving equality for people with disabilities that live and work in Middlesbrough.

The town's largest landlord has launched its first Disability Equality Scheme. The scheme was developed in line with the Disability Discrimination Act 2005 and in consultation with local people who have disabilities, including Erimus Housing employees, and with local agencies and support groups.

The scheme contains a three-year action plan which reflects the priorities of these groups and which sets out how Erimus will promote equality of opportunity for people with a disability, eliminate disability-related discrimination and harassment and take whatever steps are necessary to meet the needs of disabled people.

Brenda Kirby, Director of Corporate Services, said: "Our research shows that many people living and working in the town have a disability or long standing illness. We have listened to what these people have told us, and are determined to tackle the problems that they have raised.

"What is clear is that housing is a major priority for people with disabilities, and our first scheme and action plan is only the first step in redesigning the way we do business to meet their needs and aspirations. Today we also give our clear commitment to undertaking more community outreach work in the future.”

Edna Donnelly, Erimus Housing’s board member champion for diversity, added: “Erimus is determined to be a supportive and inclusive employer.

"Many of our employees have told us that they have a disability and we will continue to support them but we recognise that we need to do more to attract people with disabilities to come and work for Erimus. We are fully committed to achieving a diverse workforce that reflects the community we serve.”

Earlier this year Erimus Housing was recognised as an Investor in People and last year, scooped the two tick disability symbol for its commitment to disability in its recruitment and working practices.
