People living on Elder Court and Hazel Court lifted their glasses to toast the 20th anniversary of The Courts Meeting Room, owned by Erimus Housing.

Bob Brady, Chair of the board for Erimus Housing and Middlesbrough’s deputy Mayor, officially unveiled a plaque at the complex at 1pm.

It was the third time Councillor Brady had helped residents celebrate at the site.

He opened the facility while he was Chair of Middlesbrough Council’s housing committee in 1985 and cut the cake at its tenth birthday party during his time as Mayor of Middlesbrough.

A number of other special guests turned out to today’s festivities, including local police officers, housing officers and street wardens.

Cllr Brady said: "I am delighted to be asked to help commemorate this special day.

"The complex is a real asset to the community and is greatly valued by its many users.

"I hope its success will continue to rise and there will be yet more reasons to celebrate at the centre."

The complex, situated on Elder Court, was originally launched by Middlesbrough Council and is now run by volunteers, opening five days a week.

It is used mainly for fundraising and social events and plays home to facilities including a computer, fax and phone and is used by around 200 residents of all ages.

Joe Bennett, one of the centre’s users, said: "It is well used and it is in the heart of the community.

"We wanted to thank everyone who has supported it over the last 20 years."
