PLANS to develop the first new homes as part of a major revamp of Grove Hill are being revealed in a major step forward for the massive regeneration scheme.
Erimus Housing is planning to build 30 much-needed new properties for affordable rent and sale on Castle Way on the estate.
The news comes as Middlesbrough’s largest landlord, in partnership with Middlesbrough Council, announces national construction and development company Southdale as its development partner on the £2m scheme.
The move marks the start of the next phase of the regeneration of the estate, which has so far seen the demolition of almost 300 unpopular properties to make way for the facelift.
Erimus Housing, part of Fabrick Housing Group, has been working with Middlesbrough Council on the masterplan for the area, which includes new mixed housing, community facilities and commercial outlets to create a sustainable, vibrant neighbourhood.
The first of the new homes, planned for an area of previously cleared land that had been earmarked for development, have received more than £2m of Homes and Communities Agency funding.
Chris Smith, Managing Director of Erimus Housing, said: “We have remained committed to this massive regeneration scheme and would like to thank all the residents for their patience and input throughout the process so far.
“This is the next phase and marks the start of significant development on the estate, a move which will make a massive difference to the lives of everyone living in the area and that will be a real boost to Middlesbrough.”
Six two bedroom and 14 three bedroom houses will be built for rent, as well as two three bedroom and eight four bedroom properties for sale. Work is planned to start in February next year.
The properties will be built to high environmental standards, featuring photovoltaic panels and water and energy saving measures.
Councillor Charlie Rooney, Middlesbrough Council’s Executive Member for Regeneration and Economic Development, said: “This is an excellent step forward for the regeneration in Grove Hill, and will act as a catalyst to kick start the rest of the master plan proposals.
“These 30 new homes are much need and will transform the central area, providing modern and attractive housing options for local people.
“In such difficult economic times, and with relatively few new homes being built, this a positive and encouraging sign of progress for Grove Hill, and Middlesbrough as a whole.”
Paul Oldridge, Southdale’s Regional Director, said: “Southdale is delighted to work in partnership with Erimus Housing on this high profile community regeneration scheme in Middlesbrough.
“Our skills and experience in developing high quality affordable and private housing will mean we are well equipped to meet customer expectations by delivering a sustainable community where people aspire to live and work.”
