AN AWARD-WINNING money advice service has almost doubled its cash saving target for residents.

 From 2010-11, help from Erimus Housing and Tees Valley Housing’s Tandem team led to positive financial outcomes worth more than £640,000 for residents – against a target of £350,000 (annualised value).

The figure also marks a £120,000 increase on savings made for residents in the 2009-10 year.

Across both companies, a total of 1,020 clients were helped and 1,270 new tenants were contacted; almost 900 for Erimus Housing and 400 for Tees Valley Housing.

The team also saw a raise in the number of disabled people Tandem advisors were able to help to 20 per cent.

Tandem helped people with loan applications, insurance, fuel tariff changes, quick benefit checks and even helped people set up bank accounts.

One resident, who asked not to be named, said: “I’m very happy with everything; a lot happier. The team members were very helpful and I felt really at ease talking to them.”

Tandem advisors offer generic advice, information and support to help residents:

• Maximise income by claiming full benefit entitlement
• Deal with debts
• Compare loan costs and access affordable loans
• Budget, save and find ways to make money go further
• Choose a bank account or other financial services, for example home contents insurance
• Access specialist benefits or debt advice services

The advisors can also help residents with a fuel tariff check and transfer, making sure clients get the best deal for their gas and electricity supplies, even helping them change supplier if necessary.
