Anti-Social Behaviour & Nuisance and Hate Crime
Our own anti-social behaviour team was formed after tenants highlighted the issue as one of their main concerns. While the estates officers deal with initial complaints of nuisance and anti-social behaviour, more serious cases, including hate crimes, are referred to a dedicated tenancy enforcement officer.
The team is committed to dealing with issues affecting the quality of life of residents, such as:
- Nuisance neighbours;
- Noise nuisance;
- Damage and graffiti;
- Problem households;
- Hate crime.
We also work alongside agencies such as Middlesbrough Council’s Neighbourhood Safety team and street wardens, as well as Cleveland Police to tackle these problems, sharing information to resolve problems.
We also undertake early intervention work with young people to try and prevent problems before they get worse.
Where neighbours have fallen out we will refer them to a specialised mediation service called UNITE which will work with them to sort out the problem. For more information contact your local housing office or www.unite-mediation.org
We use a range of tools to deal with tenants who cause problems and breach their tenancy agreements, from warning letters to demotion of tenancies and possession to Anti-social Behaviour Orders (ASBOs), injunctions and even eviction.
When the person causing problems does not live in an Erimus Housing property, we will work closely with Middlesbrough Council’s own neighbourhood safety team to ensure action is taken.
To show our commitment to tackling anti-social behaviour, Erimus Housing signed up to the Government's Respect Standard for Housing Management, working together with our residents to show:
- Accountability, leadership and commitment
- Empowerment and reassurance for residents
- Prevention and early intervention
- Tailored services for residents and provision of support for victims and witnesses
- Protection of communities through swift enforcement
- Support to tackle the causes of anti-social behaviour
Further information on the Government's Respect agenda is available at: www.respect.gov.uk
We have also signed up to a multi-agency process to deal with incidents of hate crime and racial harassment called True Vision. Victims of such crimes can easily report problems at a number of reporting centres such as local housing offices, police stations, libraries etc. or at www.report-it.org.uk
